Classification with Examples:
Degree of Comparison তিন প্রকার, যথা -
1. Positive Degree,
2. Comparative Degree,
3. Superlative Degree.
1. Positive Degree:
1. This boy is tall.
উপরের Sentence-টিতে 'tall' Adjective দিয়ে কোন তুলনা বুঝাচ্ছে না, সাধারণভাবে তা boy- টি লম্বা তা প্রকাশ করছে। এতে 'tall' Adjective এর Positive Degree হয়েছে।
Positive Degree: কোন প্রকার তুলনা না বুঝিয়ে Adjective যখন কোন ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর দোষ-গুণ প্রকাশ করে তখন Adjective-এর যে Degree হয় তাকে Positive Degree বলে।
Structure:
(I) As.....As / So.....As
(II) Adjective → Normal থাকবে
Positive Degree করতে নিচের নিয়মগুলো মনে রাখতে হবে:
- Affirmative Sentence As.....As বসবে
- Negative Sentence So.....As বসবে
- As / So + Adjective (Positive) + As + Noun Pronoun ( Subject হিসাবে ছিল ) বসে।
2. Comparative Degree:
This boy is taller than that one.
উপরের Sentence-টিতে 'tall' Adjective এর আকার taller দিয়ে this boy ও that boy এ দুজন বালকের উচ্চতার তারতম্য প্রকাশ করছে। এতে 'tall' Adjective এর Comparative Degree হয়েছে।
Comparative Degree: দুই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যকার দোষ-গুণের তুলনা করা হলে Adjective -এর যে রূপ হয় তাকে Comparative Degree বলে।
Structure:
(I) Adj + er/More + Adj
(II) Than
Comparative Degree করতে নিচের নিয়মগুলো মনে রাখতে হবে:
- একই বাক্যে দুটো Comparative Degree হবে না।
Example:
Inc: He is comparatively better today
Cor: He is better today. - একই ব্যক্তি/বস্তুর দুটি Quality কে তুলনা করার সময় Comparative Degree তে কখনোই er যুক্ত হয় না। এক্ষেত্রে Comparative Degree তে সবসময় More/Less বসে।
Example:
He is more good than bad - কোন কিছুর সমানুপাতিক হ্রাস/বৃদ্ধির ক্ষেত্রে Comparative Degree তে The বসে।
Examples:
1. The higher the post, the greater the responsibility.
2. The more he gets, the more he wants. - দুই ব্যক্তি/বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে Comparative Degree তে The বসে এবং Than এর পরিবর্তে Of বসে।
Examples:
1. This is the wiser plan of the two.
2. Rasul is the smaller of the two boys. - Comparative Degree তে কখনো একটা Possessive ব্যবহার হয় না। Possessive কমপক্ষে দুটো লাগবে বা Double Possessive বসবে।
Example:
1. My pen is more costly than yours, (এখানে Yours হলো Double Possessive) - কিছু Latin শব্দ যেমন Senior, Prefer, Inferior, Superior, Prior ইত্যাদির পরে Than এর পরিবর্তে To বসে ।
Example: I prefer death to dishonour. - Prefer যুক্ত বাক্য More/Most ব্যবহার করা হয় না।
Example:
Inc: What do you prefer most?
Cor: What do you prefer? - Ly সমন্বিত Adverb এর আগে More বসিয়ে Comparative Degree করা যায় ।
Example:
1. She dances more beautifully than anyone else. - Positive Degree-তে Very few থাকলে Comparative করার সময় than এর পরে most other/many other ব্যবহার করতে হয়।
Example:
1. Karim is cleverer than most other boys in our class.
3. Superlative Degree:
1. This boy is the tallest of all.
উপরের Sentence-টিতে 'tall' Adjective এর আকার tallest দিয়ে দু'য়ের বেশি বালকের উচ্চতার তারতম্য প্রকাশ করছে । এতে 'tall' Adjective এর Superlative Degree হয়েছে।
Superlative Degree: দুই এর অধিক ব্যক্তি/বস্তুর মধ্যেকার দোষ-গুণের তুলনা করা হলে Adjective এর যে Degree হয় তাকে Superlative Degree বলে।
Structure:
(i) Adj + est/Most + adj
(ii) The/One of the থাকবে
Superlative Degree করতে হলে নিচের নিয়মগুলো মনে রাখতে হবে:
- কিছু কিছু শব্দ নিজেই Superlative Meaning দেয়। তার সাথে Most, Very ইত্যাদি জাতীয় Adverb বসানোর দরকার নেই ।
Examples:
1. He is a perfect judge.
2. It is a unique case. - অনেকের মধ্যে 'এক' জনের ক্ষেত্রে Superlative Degree ব্যবহার করা হয়।
Example:
1. He is one of the cleverest boys in the class. - Prefer থেকে Preferable হয়। বাক্যে Prefer -এর পর than এর পরিবর্তে To বসবে এবং Preferable-এর পরেও To বসবে।
- (A) Older/ Oldest/Elder/Eldest: Older/Oldest এবং Elder/Eldest এর অর্থের অভিন্নতা থাকা সত্বেও প্রয়োগে ভিন্নতা রয়েছে। রক্তের সম্পর্ক কিংবা পরিবার বহির্ভূত কারো ক্ষেত্রে Older/Oldest ব্যবহার করা হয়।
Examples:
1. Mr. Rahaman is older than any other fellow in the village,
2. Mr. Rahaman is the oldest of all in the village.
(B) আবার পরিবারভুক্ত কারো ক্ষেত্রে Elder/Eldest ব্যবহার করা হয় ।
Examples:
1. In our family, Me. Rahaman is elder than I.
2. In our family, Mr. Rahaman is the eldest.
The Comparative and Superlative forms of the Adjective:
নিচের নিয়মগুলো দিয়ে Adjective এর Comparative Superlative রূপ সাধন করা হয়:
1. এক Syllable-বিশিষ্ট Adjective এবং দুই Syllable বিশিষ্ট কিছু কিছু Adjective-এর শেষে 'er' যোগ করে Comparative এবং 'est' যোগ করে Superlative করা হয় ।

2. Adjective-এর শেষে একটি Consonant থাকলে এবং তার আগে Vowel থাকলে 'er' যোগ করে Comparative এবং ’est' যোগ করে Superlative করা হয় । উভয়ক্ষেত্রে শেষের Consonant-টি দু'বার ব্যবহৃত হয় অর্থাৎ Double হয়।

(b) Adjective-এর শেষে একটি Consonant থাকলে এবং Consonant-এর পূর্বে দু'টি Vowel থাকলে 'er' যোগ করে Comparative এবং 'est' যোগ করে Superlative করা হয় । এক্ষেত্রে Consonant-টি Double ('দ্বিত্ব’) হয় না।

(c) Adjective-এর শেষে একটি Consonant থাকলে এবং Consonant-এর পূর্বে একটি Vowel থাকলে 'er' যোগ করে Comparative এবং 'est' যোগ করে Superlative করা হয় । এক্ষেত্রে Consonant-টি দুবার ব্যবহৃত হয় অর্থাৎ Double হয়।

3. Adjective-এর শেষে 'e' থাকলে তাদের শেষে শুধু 'r' যোগ করে Comparative এবং 'st' যোগ করে Superlative করা হয় ।

4. Adjective-এর শেষে 'Y' এবং তার পূর্বে Consonant থাকলে Y-এর স্থলে I বসিয়ে এবং এরপর 'er' যোগ করে Comparative এবং 'est' যোগ করে Superlative করা হয়।

Note: Adjective-এর শেষে 'y' এবং তার পূর্বে Vowel থাকলে Y এর কোন পরিবর্তন হবে না। শুধু 'er' যোগ করে Comparative এবং est' যোগ করে Superlative করা হয় ।

5. কতকগুলো Adjective - এর Comparative ও Superlative করার সময় কোন নিয়ম অনুসারে পরিবর্তন হয় না। এগুলো অনিয়মিতভাবে গঠিত হয়।

6. Adjective যদি দুই বা দুইয়ের অধিক Syllable-বিশিষ্ট হয় তবে উৎকৃষ্টতা বুঝাতে তার আগে more যোগ করে Comparative এবং most যোগ করে Superlative করা হয় এবং অপকৃষ্টতা বুঝাতে তার আগে less যোগ করে Comparative এবং least যোগ করে Superlative করা হয়।

Note: Adjective যদি দুই Syllable বিশিষ্ট হয় এবং এই শেষে le , y , ow থাকলে কিংবা শেষ Syllable-এ জোর পড়লে 'er' যোগ করে Comparative এবং 'est' যোগ করে Superlative করা হয়।
7. ইংরেজিতে ১২টি Adjecive ল্যাটিন ভাষা থেকে এসেছে যাদের শেষ দুটি অক্ষর 'er' না হয়ে 'or' হয়েছে। এদের Positive ও Superlative Degree নেই, কেবল Comparative Degree রয়েছে। এগুলো হলো: Exterior, interior, ulterior, major, minor, superior, inferior, senior, junior, prior, anterior posterior.
এদের মধ্যে প্রথম ৫টি (exterior, interior, ulterior, major, minor) Comparative অর্থ হারিয়ে Positive Degree হিসেবে অর্থাৎ Attributive Adjective-এর মত ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Examples:
1. The exterior surface of this box is smooth.
2. This is one of the major roads of this town.
অন্য সাতটি (superior, inferior, senior junior, prior, anterior & posterior) Comparative Degree এর Adjective রূপে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এদের পূর্বে than না বসিয়ে to বসাতে হয় । তবে এদের পূর্বে more বসে না।
Examples:
3. He is junior to me in service. (than নয়)
4. He is superior to me in the rank.
Comparative Degree ছাড়া else, other এবং এদের সম্মিলিত রূপের পর than ব্যবহৃত হয়ে থাকে। Else-এর পরে than ও but উভয়টিই ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে, কিন্তু other-এর পর কখনো but ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে না ।
Examples:
5. She is none cise than (or but) my sister.
6. There is no other alternative than resignation.
Note: No other alternative এর পরিবর্তে no alternative এর ব্যবহার বর্তমানে অধিক যুক্তিযুক্ত।
8. Superlative এর আগে the বসে। যাদের মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয় তাদের নামের আগে of এবং কোন স্থান নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝালে তার নামের আগে in বসে।
Examples:
1. She is the best student in our class.
2. Of all the animals the elephant is the largest.
3. Aleya is the fairer of the two girls.
Note: দুইয়ের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে উৎকৃষ্ট বা অপকৃষ্ট এরূপ তুলনা করা হলে Comparative Degree - এর Adjective-এর আগে the ও of বসে।
9. একই বাক্যে একই Adjcetive-এর জন্য Double Comparative এবং Double Superlative একই সঙ্গে ব্যবহৃত হয় না।
Examples:
1. His father is better today.
2. It is the tallest building.
10. দুইয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে Comparative এবং দুইয়ের অধিকের মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে Superlative Degree ব্যবহৃত হয়। Examples: 1. She is more beautiful than Sabina. 2. She is the most beautiful of all the girls.
11. কতগুলো Adverb আছে যেগুলো তুলনা অর্থ প্রকাশ করলে অর্থাৎ Comparative ও Superlative-এর রূপ প্রকাশ করলে তা Adjective-এ পরিণত হয় ।

15. যখন একই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর দু'টি গুণের মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয়, তখন 'er' দ্বারা Comparative না করে প্রথম Adjective-টির আগে more বসিয়ে তা করতে হয়।
Examples:
1. This thing is more cheap than good.
2. This man is more bold than wise.
Comparison of Adverbs :
Adjective-এর মতো Adverb-এর ও Comparison হয়ে থাকে। এ ক্ষেত্রে মনে রাখতে হবে -
1. এক Syllable-বিশিষ্ট Adverb এর শেষে 'er' যোগ করে Comparative এবং 'est' যোগ করে Superlative করা হয়।
