Kinds of Sentence

যে শব্দ সমষ্টি (a group of words) একটি পূর্ণ অর্থ প্রকাশ করে তাকে Sentence বলে। অর্থাৎ যে সুবিন্যস্ত শবসমষ্টির দ্বারা বক্তার মনের সম্পূর্ণরূপে প্রকাশ পায় তাকেই Sentence বলে ।Example:

(i) He is a good man.

(ii) I did it.

(iii) Does he have much money?

Sentence কে প্রধানত দুটি দৃষ্টিকোণ হতে ভাগ করা হয় যথা- (ক) অর্থানুসারে ( According to meaning ) (খ) গঠন অনুসারে ( According to Structure )

Types of sentences according to Meaning

অর্থানুসারে ( According to meaning ) sentence পাঁচ প্রকার যথা-

Assertive sentence
Interrogative sentence
Imperative sentence
Optative sentence
Exclamatory sentence

1. Assertive Sentence (সাধারণ বর্ণনাত্মক): এই ধরনের Sentence কর্তার সাধারণ বক্তব্য বা বিবৃতি তুলে ধরে অথবা কর্তা এক্ষেত্রে সাধারণভাবে তার মনের ভাব প্রকাশ করে থাকে।
☞ Structure: Subject + Verb + Object + Extension.
Example:
1. I know him.
2. The Tajmahal is a symbol of love.

2. Interrogative Sentence (প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য): এই ধরনের বাক্য গুলো প্রশ্ন করার জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়ে থাকে।
☞ Structure: Auxiliary verb + Subject + Main Verb + Extension?
Example:
1. Do you know the girl?
2. What does the man want?

3. Imperative Sentence (আদেশমূলক, অনুরোধমূলক, উপদেশমূলক বাক্য): এ ধরনের বাক্য দ্বারা আদেশ, অনুরোধ, পরামর্শ, নির্দেশ দেয়া হয়।
☞ Structure: Main Verb + Object + Extension
অথবা Let + Object + Verb + Extension

5. Exclamatory Sentence (আবেগসূচক বাক্য): হর্ষ, বিষাদ, আনন্দ বা অত্যাধিক আবেগের বহিঃপ্রকাশে এই ধরনের Sentence ব্যবহৃত হয়।
☞ Structure: What /How + Adjective + Noun + Subject + Verb + Is + !

2.How beautiful the picture is!

❖ এই পাঁচ রকম Sentence এর প্রত্যেকটিকে আবার দুই ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়।
1. Affirmative Sentence: হ্যাঁ বোধক ইতিবাচক বাক্যকেই ইংরেজিতে Affirmative Sentence বলে। এইসব বাক্যে কোন Negative word ব্যবহৃত হয় না।
Example: He went there.
2. Negative Sentence: নেতিবাচক বা না বোধক বাক্যকেই ইংরেজিতে Negative Sentence বলে।
Example: He did not go there.

Types of sentences according to Structure

গঠন অনুসারে Sentence কে তিন ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়। যথা:

Simple sentence
Complex sentence
Compound sentence

1. Simple Sentence (সরল বাক্য): যে Sentence একটি মাত্র Subject এবং একটি মাত্র Finite Verb দ্বারা গঠিত তাকে Simple Sentence বলে।
Example:
1. The boys are playing football in the field.
2. He bought some books.
3. The fan moves slowly.
4. Keya has done well in the examination.

2. Complex Sentence (জটিল বাক্য): যে Sentence- এ একটি Principal/Independent Clause ছাড়াও এক বা একাধিক Subordinate Clause থাকে যা Clause marker এর মাধ্যমে Principal Clause এর সাথে যুক্ত হয় তাকে Complex Sentence বলে।

Complex Sentence (চেনার উপায়): When, who, where, which, how, if, as if, unless, so that, so....... that, why, where, what, as, because, since, though, although, till, until, before, after প্রভৃতি Clause Marker দ্বারা Complex Sentence চেনা যায় ।

1. When he came here, I decided to go.
2. Although he is rich, he is honest.
3. I bought a pen which was read .
4. I met a man who was honest.

3. Compound Sentence (যৌগিক বাক্য): একাধিক Co-ordinate Clause দ্বারা যুক্ত Sentence-কে Compound Sentence বলে। এই ধরনের Sentence- এ প্রতি Clause-ই Independent হয়ে থাকে। থাকে।

Compound Sentence (চেনার উপায়): and, but, or, as well as, either... or, nor, yet, so therefore, neither... nor প্রভৃতি Co-ordinating Conjunction দ্বারা Compound Sentence হয়ে থাকে।

1. He came here and I decided to go.
2. He went to the station and bought a ticket.
