Right Form of Verb

 English Grammar -এ Right Form of Verb অধ্যায়টি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বের দাবীদার। এ বিষয়ে ভাল করতে Tense, Sentence, Voice, Narration, Verb - এর শ্রেণীবিন্যাস এবং অন্যান্য Parts of Speech - নিয়ম এর ওপর স্বচ্ছ ধারণা থাকতে হবে। নিম্নে Right Form of Verbs -এর কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম আলোচনা করা হল ।

Rule – 1 : চিরন্তন সত্য, নিত্য সত্য, বর্তমান কালের অভ্যাস ও কর্তব্য বুঝাতে Present Indefinite Tense হয়। , Everyday, Everyweek, Everymonth, Everyyear, Often, Never, Always, Twice, Thrice Sometimes, Rarely, Frequently, Usually, Normally, Regularly, Generally, Daily, Occasionlly, Once a year প্রভৃতি থাকলে Present Indefinite Tense হয়।
Examples:
(i) He ( does not take) tea every morning.
(ii) We often (fall) a victim of circumstance.

Rule 2 (A): কোন Sentence - এ সাধারণত Now, At this moment, At this time, At present, Day after day, Gradually ইত্যাদি থাকলে Present Continuous Tense হয় । একই ভাবে, বর্তমানে তাৎক্ষণিক দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণমূলক শব্দ যেমন look, listen, hush ইত্যাদি থাকলে-ও Present Continuous Tense হয়। (উল্লেখ করা প্রয়োজন যে, যে সব Verb-এর Continuous Tense হয় না সেগুলোকে Simple Present-এ করতে হবে)
Examples:
(i) I now ( am waiting ) for you.
(ii) He ( is reading ) the newspaper at this moment.

Rule 2 (B): কোন Sentence- এ Tomorrow থাকলে বা কোন শব্দ দ্বারা “নিকট ভবিষ্যত বুঝালে ” Present Continuous Tense এ কাজ করতে হবে।
Examples:
(i) I ( am going ) to Rajshahi tomorrow.
(ii) He ( is going ) to Kolkata today evening.

Rule 3: কোন Sentence -এ Just, Justnow, Ever, Never, Yet, Still, Already, Lately, Recently, In the meantime, Up to now ইত্যাদি থাকলে Present Perfect Tense হয়।
Examples:
(i) I ( have sent ) only one letter to my friend up to now.
(ii) He never ( has visited ) the Tajmahal.

Rule – 4: কোন বাক্যে “হতে/থেকে/চেয়ে/যাবৎ/ধরে” ইত্যাদি বুঝালে Since বা For যখন বসে তখন বাক্যটি Present Perfect Tense বা Present Perfect Continuous Tense -এ কাজ করতে হয়। এখানে Since/For এর পর Time এর উল্লেখ থাকে ।
Examples:
(i) He ( has been living ) in Dhaka for five months.
(ii) I ( have been ) in Dhaka since 2012.
(iii) I ( have been ) here since Monday.
(iv) They ( have been digging ) the pond for a month.

Rule 5: কোন Sentence এ Last, Lastnight, Lastweek, Lastmonth, Lastyear, Yesterday, The day before yesterday, Ago, Long ago, Long since, Once upon a time, Once, Formerly এবং Past indicating word ইত্যাদি থাকলে তা Past Indefinite Tense -এ কাজ করতে হবে।
Examples:
(i) I ( opened ) the door five minutes ago.
(ii) He ( dreamt ) a sweet dream last night.
(iii) The road ( began ) at that point .

Rule 6: কোন Sentence এ At that time, At that moment, Then ইত্যাদি থাকলে Past Continuous Tense এ কাজ করতে হবে। অতীতের দুটি সমসাময়িক ঘটনা While / As দ্বারা যুক্ত হলে While বা As Clause টি Past Continuous Tense এবং অপর Clauseটি Past Indefinite Tense এ হয়।
Examples:
(i) I ( was waiting ) for you at that time.
(ii) As the sun ( shone/was shining ), I decided to go out.

Rule – 7: অতীতকালে দুটি ঘটনা পরপর ঘটলে যে কাজটি আগে ঘটে তা হয় Past Perfect Tense এ এবং যে কাজটি পরে ঘটে সেই কাজটি Past Indefinite Tense এ হয়। এক্ষেত্রে Before ও After ব্যবহৃত হয়। (Before -এর পূর্বে Past Perfect Tense এবং পরে Past Indefinite Tense হয়। অপরদিকে After -এর পরে Past Perfect Tense এবং পূর্বে Past Indefinite Tense হয়।)
Examples :
(i) The patient ( had died ) before the doctor came.
(ii) The train left after I ( had reached ) the station.

Rule 8: কোন Sentence -এ By this time, By 10 p.m , By January, By 2012, By + time/month/year, By + next + time/month/year ইত্যাদি থাকলে তা Future Perfect Tense -এ কাজ করতে হয়।
Examples:
(i) By 2015, I ( will have got/shall have got ) a good job.
(ii) By coming January, he ( will have gone ) to London.

Rule – 9 : Interrogative বাক্যে Tense অনুযায়ী Subject-এর পূর্বে Auxiliary Verb বসে এবং Subject -এর পরে মূল Verb বসে। কোন Interrogative বাক্যের শুরুতে WH— Word থাকলে Tense অনুসারে সেগুলোর পরে Auxiliary Verb বসে।
Examples:
(i) Does he ( have ) a house?
(ii) Why ( has he done ) the work just?

Rule 10: I wish, I fancy, It is time, It is high time, It is right time, It is proper time প্রভৃতির ক্ষেত্রে পরবর্তী Subject -এর পরের Verb এর Past Form হয়। আর Subject না থাকলে to + Verb এর Present Form হয়। Wish এর পরে Could + Verb এর Present form বসানো যেতে পারে ।
Examples:
(i) I wish I ( won/could win ) the game.
(ii) It is time we (changed) our bad habits.
(iii) It is time ( to do ) the work.

Rule - 11(A): As if/As though/Since- এর পূর্বে Present Indefinite Tense থাকলে এদের পরের অংশ 'Be' Verb অর্থে Were এবং মূল Verb অর্থে উক্ত Verb -এর Past Form হয়।
(i) He behaves asif he ( were ) mad.
(ii) It is many years since my father (died).

Rule- 11 (B) : এদের পূর্বে Past Indefinite Tense থাকলে পরে Past Perfect Tense বসে।
Examples:
(i) It was long since I (had seen) you.
(ii) She proceeded as though I not ( had not spoken ).

Rule 12: Sentence এ Mind, Can not help, Could not help, Would you mind, Look forward to, with a view to, Object to, Confess to, Get/Got used to, Be + used to প্রভৃতি এর পর Verb থাকলে সাধারনত উক্ত Verb -এর সাথে ing যুক্ত হয়।
Examples:
(i) I don't mind ( helping ) with the cooking.
(ii) I went to the market with a view to ( buying ) a book.
(iii) I am not used to ( walking ) at this time of the day.

Rule – 13 : যে কোন Preposition-এর পরে কোন Verb এ কাজ করতে বলা হলে উক্ত Verb -এর সাথে ing যুক্ত হয় ।
Examples:
(i) He was debarred from (appearing) at the examination.
(ii) I did not even think of ( going ) at Foyot's in Paris.

Rule 14: It is no good, It is no us এর পর কোন Verb থাকলে উক্ত Verb -এর সঙ্গে ing যোগ হয় ।
Example:
(i) It is no use ( talking ) to him.

Rule-15 : Lest এর পরে ব্যবহৃত Subject -এর পর সাধারনত Should বসে এবং Verb এর Present Form হয়।
Example:
(i) He ran fast lest he ( should miss ) the train.

Rule 16: NoSooner.....than, Scarcely......when, Hardly....before প্রভৃতি Correlative দ্বারা যুক্ত বাক্যে Than, When ও Before এর পূর্বে সাধারণত Past Perfect Tense এবং পরে Past Indefinite Tense বসে।
Examples:
(i) No sooner had he entered into the classroom than the bell ( rang ).
(ii) Scarcely he ( had he reached ) the station when the train left.
(iii) Hardly the train ( had the train stopped ) at the station before we got down.

Rule - 17 : Having এবং To be- এর পরে Verb -এ কাজ করতে বলা হলে Verb -এর সর্বদা Past Participle Form হয় ।
Examples:
(i) Having (forgotten) him, I went outside the cabin.
(ii) He seems the road to be (blocked).

Rule – 18 ( A ) : যদি কোন Simple Sentence-এ দুটো Verb পাশাপাশি থাকে এবং ২য় Verb -এ কাজ করতে বলা হয় তবে ২য় Verb -এর সাথে সাধারনত ing যোগ করতে হয় অথবা ২য় Verb-এর Past Participle Form করতে হয়।
Examples:
(i) I saw the boy (playing) football.
(ii) He gave up (playing) football when he got married.
(iii) He saw the boat (floating) down the river.
(iv) Bangladesh is an independent country (gained) her freedom from Pakistan.

Rule – 18 (B) : যদি কোন Simple Sentence-এ দুটো Verb পাশাপাশি থাকে এবং ১ম Verb = Let, Make, Bid, Need, Dare, Watch, Hear ইত্যাদি থাকে তবে ২য় Verb-এর Base Form বসবে।
Examples:
(i) I heard the baby (cry) for its food.
(ii) I let him (go) away.
(iii) He dare not (drive) at night.

Rule-19: Sentence- এ Had better, Would rather, Would better, Had rather ইত্যাদি থাকে এবং তারপর Verb এর কাজ করতে বলা হয় তবে এদের পর Verb-এর Base Form হবে।
Examples:
(i) Travellers had better (get) their reservation well in advance if they want to visit the St. Martin Island.
(ii) You had better (go) home.

Rule 20 : So... that এর পূর্বে Present Tense থাকলে পরে Can এবং পূর্বে Past Tense থাকলে পরে Could বসে। এছাড়া সামনে Past Tense থাকলে পরেও Past Tense বসে।
Examples:
(i) Wasim is so brave that he (can do) any work.
(ii) Anayet was so weak that he (could not walk).
(iii) He was so tired that he (laid) down on the floor.

Rule 21: Too ........... to থাকলে to এর পর Verb এর Base Form বসবে।
Examples:
(i) Dipa is too fat to(move).
(ii) Nipa was too black to (look) at the mirror.

Rule-22: কোন Complex Sentence এর একটি Clause যে Tense থাকবে তার অপর Clause টি ও সাধারণত ঠিক একই Tenseএ হবে।
Examples:
(i) When I was a boy, I (visited) London.
(ii) He (did not attend ) the class since was ill.
(iii) Though there was water everywhere around them, the sailors (had) not a drop to drink.
(iv) He was so weak that he ( was ) not able to walk.
(v) I bought a novel that Shila (borrowed).
(vi) As the day went on, the weather (got) worse .
(vii) While I was going to college, I (witnessed) a terrible accident.

Rule - 23 (A) : যদি If দ্বারা গঠিত একটি Clause এ Present Tense থাকে তবে অপর Clause এ ও Present Tense হবে। এখানে Scientific Truth, Universal Truth ও Habitual Fact ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Example:
(i) If you heat water to 100°c, it (boils).
(B) যদি If দ্বারা গঠিত একটি Clause এ Present Tense থাকে, তবে অপর Clause এ Future Tense ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Example:
(i) If he helps me, I (shall help/will help) him.
(C) যদি If দ্বারা গঠিত একটি Clause এ Past Indefinite Tense থাকে তবে অপর Clause এ Would/could / might + Verb এর Present Form ব্যবহৃত হবে।
Example:
(i) If he tried, he (would succeed).
(D) যদি If দ্বারা গঠিত একটি Clause এ Past Perfect Tense থাকে তবে অপর Clause Would/could/might + have + Verb এর Past Participle Form বসবে।
Example:
(i) If he had invited me earlier, I (would have attended ) the function.
(E) যদি একটি Clause এ Had + Subject + Verb এর Past Participle থাকে তবে অপর Clause এ Would/could/might + have + Verb এর Past Participle Form বসবে।
Example:
(i) Had he called me, I (would have responded) him.

Rule - 24 : Would that এর পর Verb এ কাজ করতে বলা হলে Could + Verb এর Present Form বসবে ।
Example:
(i) Would that I (could enter) the house.
