Rule-1: কোন Sentence- এর Verb তার Subject এর Number, Person ও Tense অনুযায়ী নির্ধারিত হয়। অর্থাৎ কোন বাক্যের Subject টি Singular হলে Verb টি Singular এবং Subject টি Plural হলে Verb টি Plural হয়। এক্ষেত্রে Verb টি সর্বদা subject এর Headword দ্বারা নির্ধারিত হয়। (Subject এর Modifier এর সাপেক্ষে কখনোই এর Verb বসে না।)
Examples:
1. The colour of his eyes is/was blue.
2. The office of the executives is/was nice.
Rule-2 ( A ) : দুই বা দুই এর অধিক Singular Noun বা Pronoun যদি 'And' দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তবে তাদের পরে সাধারণত Plural Verb এবং Plural Pronoun বসে ।
Examples:
1. Time and tide wait for none.
2. You and I are friends.
Rule-2. (B) : তবে ‘And' দ্বারা যুক্ত Subject গুলো যদি একক সমষ্টিগত ধারণার ইঙ্গিত প্রদান করে অথবা একটি অন্যটির অবিচ্ছেদ্য এবং অতি সম্পৃক্ত হয় তবে এদের Verb এবং Pronoun উভয়ই Singular হবে।
Examples:
1. Slow and steady (wins) the race.
2. Bread and butter (is) my favourite breakfast.
Rule-2. (C): তবে Mathematical Calculation এর বেলায় একই জাতীয় সংখ্যা যদি And দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তবে তাদের পর Verb টি Singular হবে। আর যদি ভিন্ন ভিন্ন জাতীয় সংখ্যা And দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তবে তাদের পর Verb টি Plural হবে ।
Examples:
1. Two and two (makes) four.
2. Three and two (make) five.
Rule-3. (A): দুটি Singular Subject যদি ‘And’ দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় এবং এগুলোর পূর্বে Each, Every, No ইত্যাদি থাকলে এদের পরে Verb ও Pronoun সর্বদা Singular হয়।
Examples:
1. Each boy and each girl (has) got a prize.
2. No boy and no train (is/was) seen.
Note : কিন্তু No / None -এর পরে Plural Noun থাকলে Verb টিও Plural হয়ে থাকে।
Examples:
1. No birds (are ) there.
2. No girls ( are ) qualified for the jobs.
Rule-3. (B): More than one thing, No one, None ইত্যাদি Subject হয় তবে এদের পরের Verb টি সব সময় Singular হবে ।
Examples:
1. More than one thing ( is ) never eaten in luncheon.
2. No one ( is ) free from error.
Rule 4 : কোন বাক্যে As well as, With, Together with, Along with, Followed by, Including, In addition to, Accompanied by, No less than gf Words, Group of Words দ্বারা দুটি Subject যুক্ত থাকলে সে ক্ষেত্রে প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। অর্থাৎ ১ম Subject-টি Singular হলে Verb টি Singular এবং Subject টি Plural হলে Verb টি Plural হবে।
Examples:
1. The father with his three sons (has) left the place.
2. The chairmman as well as other the members ( was ) present in the last meeting.
Rule-5: 'And' এর পর No/Not + Noun/Pronoun থাকলে Verb টি সাধারণত ‘And’ এর পূর্ববর্তী Subject অনুযায়ী বসবে।
Example:
1. Jamal and not his sons ( has ) helped me.
Rule-6 : এক জাতীয় সবাই কে বুঝাতে (সার্বজনীন / সাধারণীকরণ করতে) Adjective -এর পূর্বে The বসালে Verb টি Plural হয়। কিন্তু একই অর্থে Noun -এর পূর্বে ‘The ' বসালে Verb টি Singular হয়।
Examples:
1. The brave (deserve) the fair.
2. The ant ( is ) a very intelligent insect.
Rule-7: দুই বা ততোধিক Noun বা Pronoun যদি Not only ...... but also, Either ... or, Neither ... nor, Or, Nor ইত্যাদি দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে তবে পরে যে Noun / Pronoun থাকে তার সাপেক্ষ Verb ব্যবহৃত হবে।
Examples:
1. Neither Rini nor her sisters ( are/were ) qualified for the jobs.
2. You or I ( was ) present that day.
Rule-8. (A) : কোন Sentence-এ বিভিন্ন Person -এর Noun বা Pronoun একত্রে লেখার সময়ে প্রথমে 2nd Person, তারপর 3rd Person এবং শেষে 1st Person বসে। (সংক্ষেপে 231.)
Example:
Inc : I, you and Alam are present.
Corr: You, Alam and I are present.
Rule-8. (B) : কিন্তু দোষ স্বীকার করলে বা বুঝালে প্রথমে 1st Person, তারপর 2nd Person এবং সর্বশেষে 3rd person বসে। (সংক্ষেপে 123 )
Example:
Inc: You, Alam and you are guilty.
Corr: I, you and Alam are guilty.
Rule-9 : কোন বাক্যে Subject যদি One of, Each of, Every of, Either of, Neither of, One third of হয় , তবে এগুলোর পরে Plural Noun / Pronoun বসে কিন্তু এদের পর Verb-টি সব সময় Singular হয়।
Example:
1. Neither of the girls ( has ) done this.
2. Each of the students ( is ) allowed to participate the game.
Rule-10: Anybody, Anyone, Anything, Everybody, Everyone, Everything, Nothing, Somebody, Someone, Something ইত্যাদি Indefinite Pronoun গুলো Subject হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হলে এদের পর Verb সর্বদা Singular হয়।
Examples:
1. Someone (has) stolen my watch.
2. Everybody (has) done well in the examination.
Rule-11: Uncountable Noun সর্বদা Singular হয় তাই এর পর Singular Verb বসে । Uncountable Noun - এর এককগুলি Plural হলেও এদের Verb টি সর্বদা Singular হবে । (একক দূরত্ব, পরিমাণ, সময়, ওজন, বয়স ইত্যাদি এর পর Singular Verb বসে।)

Rule-12: কিন্তু Fraction এবং Percentages এর পরে Uncountable Noun থাকলে এদের পর Verb সবসময় Sigular হবে । Plural Countable Noun থাকলে এদের পর Plural Verb হবে। Countable Plural Noun -এর ক্ষেত্রে ভগ্নাংশের লব যদি ১ হয় তাহলে Singular Verb হয়। এবং লব যদি ২ বা তার অধিক হয় তবে Verb টি Plural হবে।
Examples:
1. Three-fourths of the work ( has ) been finished.
2. One-third of the books ( is/was ) sold.
3. Two-thirds of the students ( have ) done the work.
4. One-third of milk ( is/was ) sold.
Rule-13: বই, গল্প, নাটক, চলচ্চিত্র, টেলিভিশন অনুষ্ঠান, সংগীত প্রতিযোগিতা, সংবাদপত্র, ম্যাগাজিন, দেশ, সংস্থা ইত্যাদি Noun গুলো Plural রূপে থাকলেও এদের পরের Verb সব সময় Singular হয় ।
Examples:
1. The Arabian Nights ( is ) a favourite drama.
Rule-14 : A number of দিয়ে বাক্যটি শুরু হলে Verb-টি Plural হয় কিন্তু The number of দিয়ে বাক্যটি শুরু হলে Verb-টি Singular হয়।
Examples:
1. The number of people ( is/was ) very high.
2. A number of boys ( are/were ) playing in the field.
Rule-15: Many a/an এর পর যে Noun বসে তা Sigular হয় এবং যে Verb বসে তাও Sigular হয় ।
Examples:
1. Many a man ( is/was ) present in the meeting.
2. Many an ant ( is/was ) rushing to the near-by holes.
Rule-16 : Party, Team, Family, Club, Class, Jury, Committee, Council, Congress, Parliament Noun গুলো Collective Noun Collective Noun একমত পোষণ করলে Verb এবং Pronoun উভয়ই Singular হয় এবং এরা ভিন্ন মত পোষণ করলে Verb এবং Pronoun উভয়ই Plural হয়।
Examples:
1. The family ( are ) divided into three groups.
2. The jury ( is ) giving its verdict today.
3. The family ( does ) its best to make a living.
4. The jury ( are ) divided in their opinions.
Rule-17: Introductory 'Here' কিংবা 'There' দিয়ে বাক্য শুরু হলে তার পরবর্তী Verb টি Singular নাকি Plural হবে তা নির্ভর করবে Verb এর পর ব্যবহৃত Subject -এর Number এর উপর । ঐ Subject যদি Singular Number হয় তাহলে Verb-ও হবে Singular এবং ঐ Subject যদি Plural Number হয় তাহলে Verb ও Plural হবে।
Examples:
1. There ( are ) a book and a pen on the table.
2. There ( is ) a pond in this village.
Rule-18 : Relative Pronoun এর পূর্বে যে Noun/Pronoun থাকে তাকে Antecedent বা পূর্বপদ বলে। Relative Pronoun -এর পরের Verb টি তার ঠিক পূর্বের Antecedent অর্থাৎ Noun / Pronoun -এর সাপেক্ষে বসবে।
Examples:
1. It is you who ( are ) to blame.
2. He is one of those who (does) not smoke.
Rule-19 : কোন বাক্যে Anybody, Anyone, Everybody, Everyone, Nobody, Noone, Somebody, Someone, Each, Either, Neither, A person ইত্যাদি Pronoun গুলো Subject হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হলে তাদের পরে Pronoun সবসময় Singular হবে।
Examples:
1. Everybody should respect his/her teachers.
2. Neither of the two girls has done her works.
Rule-20 : One যদি বাক্যের Subject হিসেবে থাকে তাহলে এর পরবর্তী Pronoun টি One's হবে।
Example:
1. One should do one's duty.
Rule-21: Mathematics, News, Expectations, Diabetes, Wages, Furniture, Hair, Advice, Brick, Politics, Luggage, Scenery, Machinery, Poetry, Civics, Billiards, Statistics, Gallows Noun দেখতে Plural হলেও এরা আসলে Singular. তাই এদের পর Singular Verb বসে ।
Examples:
1. The wages of sin ( is ) death .
2. The scenery of Cox's Bazar ( is ) very charming.
Rule-22 : প্রশ্নবোধক Who এবং Impersonal It যদি Subject হিসেবে থাকে তাহলে এদের Verb টি সবসময় Singular হবে।
Examples:
1. Who (does) not know my name?
2. It ( is ) a matter of great sorrow that you fail in the examination.
Rule-23: Infinitive Phrase, Gerund বা Verbal Noun এবং Noun Clause -এর পর Verb সবসময় Singular হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হবে ।
Examples:
1. To tell lies ( is ) a great sin.
2. What his name is important.
Rule-24 : And দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি পদ আলাদা দুইজন ব্যক্তি গ্রহণ করলে দুটি পদের পূর্বেই The বসে এবং তখন পরের Verb টি সাধারনত Plural হয়। কিন্তু And দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি পদ একই ব্যক্তি গ্রহণ করলে শুধু ১ম পদের পূর্বে The বসে এবং তখন পরের Verb টি Singular হয়।
Examples:
1. The Headmaster and the Secretary (have) decided the matter.
2. The Magistrate and Judge ( was) present in the last law and order meeting.
Rule-25 : All সাধারন Sentence এ Plural এবং তাই এর পর Plural Verb বসবে। কিন্তু All প্রবাদ বাক্যে সবসময় Singular. তাই এর পর Singular Verb বসবে।
Examples:
1. All that (glitters) ( is ) not gold.
2. All ( is ) well that (ends) well.
Rule-26: Cattle, Aristocracy, Poultry, People, Peasantry,Gentry ইত্যাদি Noun গুলো সাধারনত Plural. তাই এদের পরের Verb টিও Plural হবে।
Example:
1. Cattle ( are ) grazing in the field.
Rule-27: A number of, The number of, A many, Many a এগুলো Subject হিসেবে ব্যবহার হলে নিন্মের নিয়মে Verb হবে।
(i) A number of /A many + Noun (plural) = Verb (plural)
(ii) The number of /Many a + Noun (plural) = verb (singular)
