Voice Change বা বাচ্য পরিবর্তন

Voice বা বাচ্য ইংরেজী গ্রামারের অন্যতম প্রধান এক বিষয় । মূলত এই অধ্যায়ে Voice বা বাচ্য কি এবং কিভাবে Active Voice থেকে Passive Voice এ রুপান্তর করা যায় তাই আলোচনা করা হয় । আজকের আলোচনাটি ও মূলত Voice Change বা বাচ্য পরিবর্তন নিয়েই । সবগুলো রুলস আমরা এখানে সহজ ও সাবলীলভাবে উপস্থাপন করার চেষ্টা করেছি । আশা করছি এই টিউটরিয়ালটি মনোযোগ দিয়ে পড়লে এই Voice Change নিয়ে আপনার আর কোন সমস্যা থাকবে না । চলুন তাহলে শুরু করা যাক ।

What is Voice ?

নিচের বাক্য দুটি পড়
I eat a mango ( আমি একটি আম খাই )।
A mongo is eaten by me ( আমার দ্বারা একটি আম খাওয়া হয়। )
১ম বাক্যে Subject হল I
২য় বাক্যে Subject হল A mango
১ম বাক্যে Object হল a mango
২য় বাক্যে Object হল me (I এর objective case)
১ম বাক্যে Verb "eat" হল সক্রিয় (কর্তা নিজেই করছে)
২য় বাক্যে Verb "is eaten" হল নিষ্ক্রিয় (কর্তার উপর চাপানো হচ্ছে)
এবার বুঝেছ বাক্য দুটির গঠনগত পার্থক্য? কিন্তু এদের উভয়ের বক্তব্য একই। প্রধান ব্যাপার হল verb. ১ম বাক্যে eat মানে খাই, ২য় বাক্যে is eaten মানে “খাওয়া হয়”— সরাসরি বলা হচ্ছে না, একটু যেন নিষ্ক্রিয়ভাবে ঝিমিয়ে ঝিমিয়ে বলা হচ্ছে। ১ম verb টি (eat— খাই) দেখলেই যে কর্তার (I) প্রভাব চোখে/কানে এসে লাগে, ২য় বাক্যের verb (is eaten - খাওয়া হয়)-টি দেখলে তার কর্তার কথা মনে পড়ে না। verb এর এই দ্বিবিধ (দুই প্রকার) রূপকে বলে Voice.
তাহলে বলা যায়, verb এর যে রূপ (form) তার subject সক্রিয় (active) না নিষ্ক্রিয় (passive) তা নির্দেশ করে তাকে Voice বা-বাচ্য বলে ।
(Voice is the form of the verb in the sentence that shows whether the subject acts or is acted upon.)

Types Of Voice :
উপরের আলোচনা থেকেই স্পষ্ট বুঝা যায় যে vcice দুই প্রকার :
(1) Active Voice (কর্তৃবাচ্য)
(2) Passive Voice (কর্মবাচ্য)
(1) Active Voice : যে voice দ্বারা বা verb এর যে রূপ-দ্বারা subject নিজে কাজ সম্পন্ন করে এরূপ বুঝায় তাকে active voice বলে। আমাদের আগের উদাহরণে-
I eat a mango হল Active voice.
(2) Passive voice : অপরপক্ষে, sentence এর subject যখন নিষ্ক্রিয় থাকে এবং অন্যের কাজ তার উপর আরোপ করা হয়, তখন verb-এর passive voice হয়। আমাদের প্রথম উদাহরণে-
A mango is eaten by me.
বাক্যটির verb এর voice হল passive voice.

Active voice কে passive voice-এ রূপান্তর

আমরা এখানে একটি চমৎকার পদ্ধতিতে active voice কে কিভাবে passive voice- এ (কিংবা passive কে active-এ) রূপান্তরিত করতে হয় তা শিখব। পদ্ধতিটিকে এমনভাবে উপস্থাপন করার চেষ্টা করা হবে যেন ছাত্র / ছাত্রীরা কারো সাহায্য ছাড়াই নিজেরা active voice কে passive voice-এ রূপান্তরিত করতে পারে ।
আগের উদাহরণটি এখানে নেয়া যাক :
Active : I eat a mango.
Passive : A mango is eaten by me.
স্পষ্টই বোঝা যাচ্ছে যে active-এর subject পরিণত হয়েছে passive- এর object-এ (I → me); active এর object (a mango) পরিণত হয়েছে passive-এর subject-এ। এবার verb এর দিকে লক্ষ্য কর : Active এর verb (eat) গিয়ে passive-এ be + V(p.p.)- রূপ আকার ধারণ করেছে; অর্থাৎ is (be) + eaten (Vp.p.) বা is eaten.
তাহলে এবার সকল tense এর জন্য একটি সাধারণ পদ্ধতি শিখব, পরে পদ্ধতিটি সামান্য রদবদল করে বিভিন্ন tense-এ প্রয়োগ করব ।
প্রথমে আমরা Assertive Sentence এর জন্য এই সাধারণ নিয়মাবলী প্রয়োগ করব এবং ধীরে ধীরে সকল tense এর জন্য অন্যান্য Auxiliary Verb বসানো অনুশীলন করব ।

Voice Change of Assertive Sentence

Active থেকে Passive করার সাধারণ নিয়মাবলী :
 Rule-1:
(i) Object কে সবার প্রথমে Subject হিসাবে বসাতে হবে। যদি Object এর সাথে Of / Under / Below/Above ইত্যাদি থাকে তবে এগুলো সহ পুরো Phrase টুকু Object এর সাথে Subject হিসাবে সবার প্রথমে বসবে।
(ii) Tense অনুসারে সাহায্যকারী Verb বসবে। (নিচের ছক অনুযায়ী বিভিন্ন Tense এ বিভিন্ন সাহায্যকারী Verb বসবে।)

Tense	Auxiliary Verb

Present Continuous	Am, is, are + Being
Present Perfect	have been / hase been
Present Perfect-Continuous	Am, is, are + Being

(iii) মূল Verb এর Past Participle Form বসবে।
(iv) By বসবে ।
কিন্তু Known এর পর To বসবে।
Filled এর পর With বসবে ।
Seized এর পর With বসবে ।
Covered এর পর With বসবে ।
Annoyed এর পর মানুষ থাকলে with বসবে।
Annoyed এর পর বস্তু/প্রাণী থাকলে at বসবে ।
Pleased এর পর মানুষ থাকলে with বসবে ।
Pleased এর পর বস্তু/প্রাণী থাকলে at বসবে ।
Surprised এর পর মানুষ থাকলে with বসবে ।
Surprised এর পর বস্তু/প্রাণী থাকলে at বসবে ।
Worried এর পর about বসবে ।
Embodied এর পর in বসবে ।
Shocked এর পর মানুষ থাকলে with বসবে।
Shocked এর পর বস্তু/প্রাণী থাকলে at বসবে ।
Contained এর পর in বসবে।
(v) Subject এর Objective Form বসবে।
(vi) যদি বিভিন্ন শব্দ / Phrase থাকে, তবে তাদেরকে By এর পূর্বে বসানো উত্তম। By এর পরে না বসানোই ভালো।
Examples:
1. Some children were helping the wounded man.
এই বাক্যটিকে আমরা উপরের পদ্ধতি অনুসারে Passive Voice এ রুপান্তর করব । উপরের নিয়মে প্রথমে থেকে কি কি দরকার তা আমরা একটি তালিকা করি :
1. Object টির Subject . ( এখানে Object হল the wounded man তার Subjective রুপও হবে the wounded man. )
2. Tense অনুসারে সাহায্যকারী Verb. ( এখানে এই বাক্যটি Past Continuous Tense তাই এর সাথে সাহায্যকারী Verb বসবে was + Being )
3. মূল Verb এর Past Participle. ( এখানে মূল Verb হল help. এর Past Participle রুপ হল helped. )
4. By . ( এখানে By বসবে )
5. Subject টির Object . ( এখানে Subject হল Some children তার Objective রুপও হবে Some children . )
এখন উপরের শব্দগুলোকে পরপর সাজিয়ে পাই ,
The wounded man was being helped by some children .
আরো উদাহরণ :
2. I know him.
Passive: He is known to me.
3. He took me there.
Passive: I was taken there by him.
4. Fortune favours the brave.
Passive: The brave are favoured by fortune.
5. His behaviour worried us.
Passive: We were worried about his behaviour.
6. His conduct annoyed me.
Passive: I was annoyed at his conduct.
7. My teacher embodied all the good qualities.
Passive: All the good qualities were embodied in my teacher.
8. His words shocked me much.
Passive: I was shocked much at his words.

এখানে লক্ষ্য কর By ছাড়াও কিন্তু অন্য প্রিপজিশন এখানে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে এবং কেন ব্যবহৃত হয়ে তা উপরের নিয়মের সাথে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে ।

 Rule-2: Active Voice এ Modal Auxiliary থাকলে Passive করার জন্য Rule-1 এর নিয়মই প্রযোজ্য । তবে একটু পার্থক্য আছে । পার্থক্যটা হল সাহায্যকারী Verb এর ক্ষেত্রে । Rule-1 এ Tense অনুযায়ী সাহায্যকারী Verb বসত । কিন্তু এখানে Tense অনুযায়ী সাহায্যকারী Verb পরিবর্তে উক্ত Modal Auxiliary Verb ই বসবে এবং Modal Auxiliary Verb এর সাথে be বসবে । গঠনটা হবে এরকম:
1. Object টির Subject .
2. Modal Auxiliary Verb + be
3. মূল Verb এর Past Participle.
4. By ( প্রয়োজন অনুসারে অন্য যে কোন preposition বসতে পারে )
5. Subject টির Object .

Examples:
1. I may help you .
Passive : You may be helped by me .
2. I can do it .
Passive : It can be done by me .
3. You must eat the mango.
Passive : The mango must be eaten by you.
4. We ought to respect our teachers.
Passive : Our teachers ought to be respected by us.
5. I have to do it.
Passive: It has to be done by me.
6. You are to colour the picture.
Passive : The picture is to be coloured by you.
7. I am going to open a shop .
Passive: A shop is going to be opened by me.

 Rule-3: যদি Active এ দুটো Object থাকে, তবে মানুষ জাতীয় Indirect Object কে সবার প্রথমে Subject হিসাবে নিতে হবে এবং বস্তু / প্রাণী জাতীয় Direct Object কে by এর পূর্বে বসাতে হবে।
Examples:
1. They elected him captain.
Passive: He was elected captain by them.
2. He gave me a flower.
Passive : I was given a flower by him.

 Rule-4 ( Passive voice of cognate verb ) :
Cognate object যুক্ত Active voice কে Passive voice এ রুপান্তরের নিয়ম :

1. Cognate object টি subject হিসেবে শুরুতে বসে +
2. tense অনুযায়ী auxiliary verb বসে +
3. মূল verb এর past participle বসে +
4. by বসে +
5. subject এর objective form বসে ।

Examples:
1. Active : He ran a race.
Passive : A race was run by him.
2. Active : He slept a sound sleep.
Passive : A sound sleep was slept by him.
3. Active : Khalek caught a nice catch.
Passive : A nice catch was caught by Khalek.
4. Active : We have fought a good fight.
Passive : A good fight has been fought by us.
5. Active : She dreamt a dream.
Passive : A dream was dreamt by her.

Note: কখনও কখনও Intransitive verb এর পরে verb এর সমার্থক word/ words object হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এ ধরনের object কে cognate object বলে।

 Rule-5 ( Passive voice of Present Participle ) : Subject + verb + object + Present participle যুক্ত Active voice কে Passive voice এ রুপান্তরের নিয়ম :
i) object টির subjective form +
ii) tense এবং person অনুযায়ী auxiliary verb +
iii) মূল verb এর past participle বসে +
iv) present participle +
v) by +
vi) subject টির object form বসে ।
Examples:
1. Active : I saw him going to market.
Passive : He was seen going to market by me.
2. Active : I saw her reading a book.
Passive : She was seen reading a book by me.
3. Active : They saw me digging earth.
Passive : I was seen digging earth by them.

 Rule-6: যদি Active এ Bare -Infinitive ( Infinitive উহ্য ) থাকে তবে Passive করতে উক্ত Bare-Infinitive এর পূর্বে To বসাতে হবে। (যদি উক্ত Sentence এ ১ম Verb = Let থাকে তবে Passive করলেও Bare-Infinitive এর পূর্বে To বসবে না। )
1. Active : He made me understand the matter.
Passive: I was made to understand the matter by him.
2. Active : He heard the baby cry for its food.
Passive: The baby was heard to cry for its food by him.
3. Active : I let him go away.
Passive : He is/was let go away by me.

 Rule-7: যদি Active এর Object = Infinitive Phrase থাকে তবে Passive করতে Transitive Verb এর পর Infinitive Phrase এর Object বসবে এবং তারপর Infinitive কে Passive করতে হবে। (এছাড়া Infinitive Phrase কে Subject আকারে সবার প্রথমে এনেও কাজ করা যায়।)
Example:
1. Active : He decided to leave the job.
Passive: He decided the job to be left.
Or, Passive: To leave the job was decided by him.
2. Active : He wanted to draw a picture .
Passive: He wanted a picture to be drawn.
Or, Passive: To draw a picture was wanted by him.

 Rule-8: যদি Complex Sentence এর Object = Noun Clause থাকে, তবে তাকে Subject হিসেবে সবার প্রথমে এনে Passive করা যায় । (এক্ষেত্রে Noun Clause এর পূর্বেও Passive করে নেয়া যায়।)
Example:
1. Active : I know that he did not work.
Passive: That he did not work is known to me.
Or, Passive : It is known to me that he did not work.

 Rule-9: যদি Active এর Structure: Subject + Linking Verb + Adjective থাকে তবে Linking Verb এর Passive করতে হবে । ( তবে Subject + Be-verb + Adjective + when + it + Verb এর Passive form ও করা যায়।)
linking verb Examples:
1. Active : Honey tastes sweet.
Passive: Honey is tasted sweet.
Or, Passive : Honey sweet when it is tasted.
2. Active : The bed felt hard. (Passive)
Passive : The bed was felt hard.
Or, Passive : The bed was hard when it was felt.
3. Active : Milk turns sour. (Passive)
Passive : Milk is turned sour.
Or, Passive : Milk is sour when it is turned.

 Rule-10: যদি Active Sentence এর Structure : Subject + Verb + Reflexive Pronoun থাকে তবে Passive করতে কেবলমাত্র Verb এর Passive করতে হবে এবং by + Reflexive Pronoun বসবে। গঠনটা হবে এরকম:
প্রদত্ত Active Voice এর Subject টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + Tense & Subject অনুযায়ী সাহায্যকারী Verb + মূল Verb এর Past Participle. + By + প্রদত্ত Reflexive object .
Examples:
1. Active : Mina killed herself.
Passive: Mina was killed by herself.
2. Active : They thanked therselves.
Passive: They were thanked by themselves.
3. Active : Rishana praised herself.
Passive: Rishana was praised by herself.

 Rule-11 ( Passive voice of quasi-passive verb ) : Quasi-Passive verb যুক্ত Active voice কে Passive voice এ রূপান্তরের সময় নিচের যে কোন একটি নিয়ম অনুসরণ করতে হয়:
প্রথম নিয়ম:
i) Active voice এর subject টিই Passive voice এর subject হিসেবে বসে +
ii) tense অনুযায়ী auxiliary verb বসে +
iii) adjective বসে +
iv) when বসে +
v) প্রথম subject অনুযায়ী it/they বসে +
vi) আবারও tense অনুযায়ী auxiliary verb বসে +
vii) মূল verb এর Past participle টি বসে

দ্বিতীয় নিয়ম:
i) Active voice এর subject টিই Passive voice এর subject বসে +
ii) tense auxiliary verb +
iii) মূল verb এর past participle বসে +
iv) প্রদত্ত adjective টি বসে

1. Active : Honey tastes sweet.
Passive : Honey is sweet when it is tasted.
or, Honey is tasted sweet.
2. Active : His book reads well.
Passive : This book affrets reader well when it is read.
or, This book is read well.
3. Active : Rice sells cheap.
Passive : Rice is cheap when it is sold.
or, Rice is sold cheap.
4. Active : The bed feels soft.
Passive : The bed is soft when it is felt.
or, The bed is felt soft.
5. Active : The rose smells sweet.
Passive : The rose is sweet when it is smelt.
or, The rose is smelt sweet.

 Rule-12: Complement বিহীন Quasi-Passive verb যুক্ত Active voice কে Passive voice এ পরিবর্তন করার নিয়মঃ
i) Active voice এর subject টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় শুরুতেই বসে +
ii) Verb 'to be' +
iii) মূল verb এর past participle বসে ।

Examples:
1. Active : The book is printing.
Passive : The book is being printed.
2. Active : The house is building.
Passive : The house is being built.
3. Active : The cow is milking.
Passive : The cow is being milked.
4. Active : The flowers are smiling.
Passive : The flowers are being smiled.

Voice Change of Imperative Sentence

 Rule-1 : Imperative বাক্যটি যদি মূল Verb দ্বারা শুরু হয় তাহলে Passive বাক্যের গঠনটি হবে নিম্নরূপ:
Let + Sub. (Active বাক্যের Object) + be + Main Verb- এর Past participle form + বাক্যের বাকি শব্দ (যদি থাকে)।
Note: Imperative বাক্যে Subject হিসেবে You উহ্য থাকে। তাই Passive বাক্যের শেষে Preposition + you বসে Adverb (now, there, here, always, quickly) Passive বাক্যের শেষে বসে।
1. Active : Do it .
Passive : Let it be done.
2. Active : Open the window .
Passive : Let the window be opened.
3. Active : Open the door .
Passive : Let the door be opened.
4. Active : Give the order .
Passive : Let the order be given.
5. Active : Shut the door .
Passive : Let the door be shut.
6. Active : Help your friend .
Passive : Let your friend be helped by you .
7. Active : Attened the class at once .
Passive : Let the class be attend at once .
8. Active : Pay the bill today .
Passive : Let the bill be paid today.
9. Active : Take care of your health .
Passive : Let your health be taken care of.
10. Active : Solve this problem .
Passive : Let the problem be solved by you.
11. Active : Stop laughing .
Passive : Let the laughing be stopped.

 Rule - 2 : Do not/Don't দ্বারা শুরু হওয়া negative - imperative বাক্যকে নিম্নের গঠনের দ্বারা Passive করা যায়।
Let + not + Sub. (Active বাক্যের Object ) + be + Main Verb- এর P.P. form + বাক্যের বাকি শব্দ (যদি থাকে ) ।
1. Active : Don't open the door .
Passive : Let not the door be opened.
2. Active : Do not shut the door .
Passive : Let not the door be shut.
3. Active : Don't help him .
Passive : Let not he be helped .
4. Active : Don't Pay the bill .
Passive : Let not the bill be paid.
5. Active : Don't Tell him .
Passive : Let not he be told .

 Rule- 3 : Let দ্বারা শুরু হওয়া Active বাক্যকে Passive করার গঠনটি নিম্নরূপ:
Let + Subject (Active বাক্যের object) + be + Main Verb-এর P.P. form + বাকি শব্দ ( যদি থাকে ) + by/with (Prep.) + Obj. (Active বাক্যের Subect).
1. Active : Let me do the sum.
Passive : Let the sum be done by me.
2. Active : Let us write a letter.
Passive : Let a letter be written by us.
3. Active : Let her sing a song.
Passive : Let a song be sung by her.
4. Active : Let me write a letter.
Passive : Let a letter be written by me.
5. Active : Let us go, you and I.
Passive : Let you and I be gone.
6. Active : Let her not kill the bird.
Passive : Let not the bird be killed by her.

 Rule- 4 : Never দ্বারা শুরু হওয়া Active বাক্যের Passive- এর গঠন নিম্নরূপ : Let + not + Sub. (Active বাক্যের object ) + ever + be + Main Verb- এর P. P. form + বাকি শব্দ (যদি থাকে)।
অথবা, Let + never + Sub. (Active বাক্যের object ) + be + Main Verb- এর P. P. form + বাকি শব্দ (যদি থাকে)
1. Active : Never tell a lie.
Passive : Let a lie never be told.
or , Let not a lie ever be told .
2. Active : Never do it.
Passive : Let it not ever be done.
Or, Let it never be done.

 Rule- 5 : Subjet (You) উহ্য থাকা imperative বাক্যে Please / Kindly থাকলে এর পরিবর্তে Passive বাক্যে 'You are requested to' বসে। এর পর Active বাক্যের মূল Verb- সহ বাকি Ask যুক্ত হয়। Negative বাক্যের Do বাদ যায় এবং to এর আগে not/never বসে ।
1. Active : Please help the poor boy.
Passive : You are requested to help the poor boy.
2. Active : Please, don't / never drink wine.
Passive : You are requested not/never to drink wine.
3. Active : 'Please, keep quiet'.
Passive : You are requested to keep quiet.

 Rule- 6 : Active বাক্যে Intransitive Verb (অকর্মক ক্রিয়া থাকলে সেক্ষেত্রে বাক্যের অর্থের উপর ভিত্তি করে 'You are requested told to' লিখে Passive করা যায়। তাছাড়া কোন ক্ষেত্রে 'should + be'- এর দ্বারাও অন্যভাবে Passive করা যেতে পারে।
1. Active : Listen to me.
Passive : You are told to listen to me.
2. Active : Hear me.
Passive : You are told to hear me.

Voice Change of Interrogative sentence

 Rule- 1 : Interrogative am, is, are, have, has, was, were had, shall, will, can, may প্রভৃতি auxiliary verb দ্বারা শুরু হলে passive বাক্যের প্রথমে উক্ত verb—ই বসে। তবে subject অনুসারে auxiliary verb পরিবর্তন হতে পারে।

 Rule- 2 : প্রথমে উপরোল্লিখিত auxiliary verb (কর্তানুসারে) + Subject (Active বাক্যের Obj. -এর Subjective form) +Tense অনুযায়ী বাকি Auxiliary (যদি থাকে) + মূল verb -এর past Participle form + বাক্যের বাকি শব্দ (যদি থাকে) + by/to/at/with/in +Object (Active Subject 4 Objective form)+?
 N.B: tense-এর একাধিক Auxiliary verb থাকতে পারে। সেক্ষেত্রে ১ম Auxiliary verb-টি subject-এর আগে বসে এবং বাকিটি / বাকিগুলো Sub. এর পরে বসে।

1. Active : Does he read books?
Passive : Are books read by him?
2. Active : Can any man love a boy who is dishonest?
Passive : Can a boy who is dishonest be loved by any man?
3. Active : Is he eating fruit?
Passive : Is fruit being eaten by him?
4. Active : Was he writing a letter?
Passive : Was a letter being written by him?
5. Active : Have you taken your breakfast?
Passive : Has your breakfast been taken by you?
6. Active : Does he speak English well?
Passive : Is English spoke well by him?
7. Active : Has Moni finished her work?
Passive : Has her work been finished by Moni?
8. Active : Will he help you?
Passive : Will you be helped by him?

 Rule- 3 : Interrogative বাক্যের শুরুতে Do / Does থাকলে Passive বাক্যের প্রথমে কর্তানুসারে am/is/are বসে। Did থাকলে বাক্যের প্রথমে কর্তানুসারে was / were বসে। Interrogative বাক্যের শুরুতে Do/Does থাকলে Passive বাক্যের প্রথমে কর্তানুসারে am/is/are বসে। Did থাকলে বাক্যের প্রথমে কর্তানুসারে was/were বসে ।

1. Active : Did the boy catch the bird?
Passive : Was the bird caught by the boy ?
2. Active : Did you eat mango?
Passive : Was the mango eaten by you?

 Rule- 4 : • Interrogative বাক্যের শুরুতে Whom থাকলে এর পরিবর্তে Passive বাক্যের শুরুতে Who বসে।
• প্রথমে Who (Whom এর পরিবর্তে ) +Verb 'to be' (tense অনুসারে )+বাক্যের মূল Verb এর Past Participle form +বাক্যের বাকি শব্দ (যদি থাকে) + by + Object (Active Voice - এর Subject - এর Objective form)

1. Active : Whom did you meet yesterday?
Passive : Who was met yesterday by you?
2. Active : Whom does he love?
Passive : Who is loved by him?
3. Active : Whom was she talking to?
Passive : Who was being talked to by her?

 Rule- 7 : Interrogative বাক্যের শুরুতে Why, When, How, Where, How long ইত্যাদি Interrogative adverb থাকলে ঐ শব্দই Passive voice এর প্রথমে বসে ।
