Definition: সাধারণত কথোপকথনের সময় বাক্যের শেষে যে সমর্থনসূচক প্রশ্ন যুক্ত করা হয় তাকে Tag Question বলে।

✔ Rule-01: Tag Question এর সময় positive বা affirmative statement এ negative tag এবং Negative statement এ affirmative tag ব্যবহৃত হয়। সেই সাথে statement এর শেষে কমা (,) এবং Tag question টির শেষে প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন বসে। যেমন-

01. He can go to the college by bus,----- ? [ DU 'A' 08-09 ]

 (A) won't he (B) must he (C) can't he (D) will he

উত্তর: (C) can't he

02. We didn't play very well today, ----? [ DU. 'A' 07-08 ]

✔ Rule-02: Negative Tag এ auxiliary verb গুলোর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন-

01. They have tried but failed------? [ DU 13-14, Unit-B ]

 (A) haven't they (B) aren't they (C) don't they (D) didn't they

02. I am just hopeless at telling jokes'------ [ CU 05-06 ]

✔ Rule-03: বাক্যের Subject টি বস্তুবাচক/প্রাণীবাচক Singular নাম বুঝালে এদের পরিবর্তে শেষে it বসে।
Ex: The book is excellent,----? = isn't it?

❖ কিন্তু বস্তুবাচক এবং প্রাণীবাচক Plural নাম থাকলে এদের পরিবর্তে They বসে।
Ex: The books are old,-? = aren't they?

✔ Rule-04: বাক্যের subject Collective Noun যেমন (cattle, sheep, army, flock, audience, group, bundle, jury, nation, etc) এর পর plural verb থাকলে এদের পরিবর্তে They বসে।
Ex: The cattle are grazing in the field,----? = aren't they?

❖ কিন্তু Collective Noun এর পর Singular verb থাকলে এদের পরিবর্তে it বসে।

Ex: The team is disqualified,-----? [ DU, B Unit-2011-12 ]

 (A) isn't it (B) wasn't (C) hasn't it (D) doesn't it

✔ Rule-05: বাক্যের Subject টি Material Noun (Milk, water, rice, oil, tea, ink, any gas, smoke, air, gold, coal, iron, wood etc.) থাকলে এদের পরিবর্তে it বসে।
Ex: Milk is white.---? = isn't it?

✔ Rule-06: বাক্যের subject টি Abstract Noun (Kindness, truthfulness, honesty, love, education, happiness etc.) থাকলে এদের পরিবর্তে it বসে।
Ex: Kindness is a great virtue,----? = isn't it?

✔ Rule-07: বাক্যের subject টি The baby, The little child, The little girl থাকলে এদের পরিবর্তে it বসে।
Ex: The baby is coming towards me.----? = isn't it?

✔ Rule-08: কিছু gerund বাচক শব্দ (Walking, swimming, smoking, etc.) বাক্যের প্রথমে থাকলে এদের পরিবর্তে it বসে ।
Ex: Walking is good for health, ---? = isn't it?

✔ Rule-09: Subject টি প্রাকৃতিক বস্তু (Moon, sun, river, hill, valley etc) থাকলে এদের পরিবর্তে it বসে।
Ex: The moon shines at night,----? = doesn't it

✔ Rule-10: দেশের নাম হলে it/she বসানো হয়।
Ex: Bangladesh is our motherland, ----? = isn't she/it?
এখানে she ব্যবহার করাই উত্তম কারণ বাংলাদেশ আমাদের মাতৃভূমি। আর "মা"কে she ধরে she বসানোই উত্তম তবে অন্য দেশের নামে দেয়া থাকলে সেখানে she নয় it বসাতে হবে।
Ex: India is our neighboring country,----? = isn't it?

✔ Rule-11: Allah এর নাম প্রথমে থাকলে শেষে He দিতে হয়।
Ex: Allah is almighty,....? isn't He?

✔ Rule-12: বাক্যে সাহায্যকারী verb এবং Modal Auxiliary verb দেয়া না থাকলে বাক্যটি present tense হলে do/does এবং past tense হলে did বসাতে হয়। যেমন-

01. Banks close at 4p.m.,---- ? = don't they
02. The girl broke the cup,---- ? = didn't she
03. She often visits her home town,-----? = doesn't she

✔ Rule-13: বাক্যের subject টি All of us, all of them, most of them, most of the people থাকলে শেষে they বসে।
Example:
All of them support him.----? = don't they?
Most of them were clever,----? = Weren't they?

✔ Rule-14: বাক্যের প্রথমে All, Everybody, Everyone, Somebody, Nobody, None, No, One, Neither এবং Plural নাম থাকলে শেষে They বসে।
Ex: Everybody went there,-----? didn't they?

✔ Rule-15: s/es যুক্ত দেখে অনেকেই does বসাতে চায় কিন্তু সব সময় হয় না। যেহেতু Everybody এর পরিবর্তে They বসে এবং they এরপর do বসে। তাই s/es যুক্ত থাকার পরও does হবে না।
❖ মূল কথা হচ্ছে প্রথমে Subject অনুযায়ী কি বসবে তা নির্ধারণ করে do/does/did বসাতে হবে।
Ex: Everyone likes the program,----? = don't they?:

✔ Rule-16: Negative Word বাক্যে থাকলে not যুক্ত করতে হয় না, positive tag হয়। এগুলো হচ্ছে Nobody, None, No one, neither, no, hardly, few, scarcely, seldom, barely, never, don't, nothing, not little ইত্যাদি ।
Ex: He never goes out with his dog,----? = does never he

✔ Rule-17: বাক্যের প্রথমে Nothing, Something, anything, everything থাকলে শেষে it হয়। Nothing থাকলে anything ও বসানো হয়।
Example:
Nothing is impossible,---? = is it?
Nothing is unnecessary,---? = is anything?

✔ Rule-18: কিছু কিছু verb আছে যাদের Present, Past এবং participle form একই। এগুলো নিচে দেওয়া হলো:

Ex: I cut the wood,---- ? don't?/didn't I?

❖ এখানে do / did দু'টিই বসানো যাবে যেহেতু Present এবং Past form একই।
Ex: She put her hand to my hand,-----? = don't?/didn't she?
এখানে Put না থেকে Puts থাকলে doesn't she হতো।
মনে রাখতে হবে (He, she, it এবং singular নাম) ছাড়া অন্য Sub: থাকলে do এবং did উভয়ই বসানো যায়।

✔ Rule-19: What যুক্ত Exclamatory বাক্যে it দিতে হয়।
Ex: What a nice book it is, -? = isn't it?

✔ Rule-20: আমরা জানি Man শব্দটি Singular কিন্তু Man দ্বারা যদি সমগ্র মানবজাতিকে বোঝায় তাহলে শেষে They বসে।
Ex: Man is mortal, --? = aren't they?

✔ Rule-21: Imperative বাকোর মাধ্যমে যদি কোন advice / order বোঝানো হয় তাহলে শেষে will you / Won't you? বসাতে হয়।
Example:
01. Shut the door,----? = won't you?
02. Come and see me tomorrow, ---? = will you?

✔ Rule-22: বাক্যের প্রথমে Let's/Let us থাকলে তা দ্বারা যদি কোন proposal বোঝায় শেষে Shall we? বসে।
Ex: Let's have a party,---? = shall we?

✔ Rule-23: বাক্যের প্রথমে it/there থাকলে it/there ই বসে ।
Ex:
It is new,---? = isn't it?
There are many stars in the sky,----? = aren't there?

✔ Rule-24 : বাক্যে pronoun এর antecedent ব্যবহৃত হলে antecedent টি যে pronoun কে নির্দেশ করে সেই pronoun অনুসারে tag question করতে হয়।
Ex: It is man who pollutes the environment,---? isn't he?
এখানে subject হচ্ছে man তাই he বসানো হয়েছে।
Ex: It is health which is wealth,---? = isn't it?
এখানে subject হচ্ছে health তাই it বসানো হয়েছে।
Ex: It is I who am a poor boy,----? = aren't I?

✔ Rule-25: If যুক্ত বাক্যের ২য় অংশ দেখে tag question বসাতে হয়।
Ex: If you study well, you will do better, ? = won't you?
If they came, I would go,----? = wouldn't I?

✔ Rule-26: Exclamatory বাক্যে যখন সাহায্যকারী verb দেয়া থাকে না সেখানে is ধরে নিতে হয় এবং এই সমস্ত বাক্যে সাহায্যকারী verb এরপর It ও ধরে নিতে হয়। যেমন:
Example:
How old, --? = isn't it?
What a strange, -- ? = isn't it?
❖ Tag Questions করার সময় যে জিনিসটি তোমার বেশি খেয়াল রাখতে হবে তা হলো বাক্যটিতে একটি না দুটি sentence দেয়া আছে। একটি দেয়া থাকলে স্বাভাবিকভাবে হবে। আর দুটি বাক্য দেয়া থাকলে ১ম বাক্যের নয় বরং ২য় বাক্যে tag negative নিতে হয়।
Ex: Nafeez is reading a book. He will go to college, ---? = won't he?
❖ এখানে দ্বিতীয় বাক্য অনুযায়ী সাহায্যকারী verb will এর tag Negative form won't বসানো হয়েছে।
